Mindfulness is the ability to observe the moment, to fully perceive it. Often we avoid the present, try to distract ourselves, are preoccupied with our thoughts without consciously observing. When I am mindful in the moment, I can first observe what my thoughts are occupied with. What is my mood? Am I excited, angry, worried?

Mindfulness then allows me to choose: Do I want to think about something specific for the hundredth time, or not? Instead, I might simply choose to consciously perceive my breath, my body, or even my surroundings. Or I might choose to think about what’s currently on my mind in a different way.

That’s one of the treasures of practicing mindfulness: you gradually regain more choice in situations where you previously reacted automatically. You can also observe more closely what’s actually happening and thus get to know yourself better and better. And you might miss fewer of the little wonders of everyday life – the birdsong, the sun on your skin, nature all around you. Stress decreases. And over time, the moments of silence become more frequent.
